Karama is so blessed to have a passionate team of women who have dedicated time, energy, and lots of love to our mission. We have a Board of Directors with 10 members, a growing team of staff members, and dozens of tireless volunteers called the Karama Mamas that are included in the Karama family.

Susan joined the Karama team through her friendships with Dyan Larmey and Jill Morley, Karama founders, through serving on the YoungLife Africa committee. After hearing the purpose behind Karama, Susan hoped to use her experience in the home and gift industry to further the Karama mission. As a board member, Susan is dedicated to advising on products and streamlining the fair trade process. Her passion for empowering artisans, especially women, coincides with her dream that one day no one will be marginalized due to their economic status, and that they will be freed from extreme poverty because of purposeful employment. Susan loves that Karama is providing opportunities for people living in the midst of poverty, helping Americans shop with purpose through fair trade, and helping spread the Gospel to kids all over Africa. Susan is based in Johns Creek, Georgia, where she lives with her husband and two children. She is also co-owner of Cabell’s Designs.

Dana’s expertise comes in the form of an International Relations degree from Stanford, a C.P.A., an alma mater at the Stanford Business School, and work experience at large accounting and marketing firms. Coupled with her volunteer work, love for family life, and volunteer positions in church, youth sports, and Young Life, Dana found a calling in service to others by using her extensive skills. For over thirteen years, Dana and her husband Mike have served on the Young Life Africa Committee, which has allowed them to make several trips to Africa to meet other Young Life leaders, and, incidentally, Karama artisans. Her love for Karama flourished, and she soon offered her finance and marketing skills to the company, where she develops marketing and business strategies and evaluates finances as a member of the Karama Board. Dana loves the Karama community, which challenges her to grow in her faith and passion for helping others to find meaningful employment. Dana lives with her husband and three children in Palo Alto, where she bakes, runs, reads, and drinks strong coffee in her spare time.

Kim discovered Karama through her friendship with Susan Peterson, and she soon fell in love with Karama’s mission to help artisans find meaningful and purposeful employment in the face of poverty and unethical work conditions. Her heart for the underdog and her motto “Be a giver, not a seller” has led her to a position on the Karama Board, where she hopes to use her experience in marketing and public relations to help Karama grow, increase brand awareness, and be an advocate for fair wages and trade opportunities.  Kim loves that Karama supports YoungLife Africa and is helping to spread the Gospel. She also loves working with the Karama mamas and members of the Board, with whom she shares a passion for serving others and spreading dignity. Kim is based in Atlanta with her husband.

Cammie began as a teacher with a degree in Special Education for Children with Intellectual Disabilities from Auburn University. After three years in education, she pursued a career in Sales Management within companies in the Southeast. She then found a calling to assume a leadership position in Community Bible Study in central Florida, and from there spent 13 years developing relationships and working in ministry. After a trip to Tanzania with YoungLife, Cammie was captivated by the work being done with young lives in Africa and decided to devote her time and energy in serving God in Africa. She joined the YoungLife Africa Committee and soon heard about Karama. Before long, Cammie’s love for sales management was rekindled through selling Karama products, and she joined the Board and became co-chair soon after. She loves the challenge of growing an organization from the ground up, but most of all values the relationships that have developed through the common bond of this fair trade business. Cammie lives with her husband Cary in Tampa, Florida, where she enjoys hiking, gardening, and teaching Bible study.

Rachel first heard about Karama through a friend, who told her to check out a cool store she might like. What she found was a tight-knit community of like-minded people who introduced her to the Karama mission and YoungLife camps. With a heart for kids, artisans, travel, and photography, Rachel decided to lend her skills to telling the Karama story through photos and videos. Within a year of walking into the Karama store, she was shooting product promotions, became part of the social media team, and had traveled to Kenya, Ethiopia, and Tanzania. Rachel is thrilled that her dreams of empowering people living in poverty through dignity have come true through her involvement with Karama, and that she is able to use her gifts to showcase the beauty, passion, and creativity of Karama’s artisans. Rachel is based in Evansville, Indiana, where she has her own photography studio. She loves finding new coffee shops, exploring, biking, and searching for vintage cameras.
